Position Summary

Lead, oversee, and participate in solid waste activities and projects. Operate a variety of equipment, including rear loaders, roll-off trucks, sweepers, and transport vehicles on public rights-of-way and City-owned facilities. Perform semi-skilled maintenance and technical tasks related to assigned responsibilities.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  1. Operate and maintain a variety transport vehicles, medium duty equipment and machinery.
  2. Service Recycling Drop-Off locations utilizing Roll-Off equipment.
  3. Operate all attachments used for transporting vehicles including hoists, drums, hydraulic systems and other auxiliary equipment; transport vehicles to appropriate location.
  4. Load trucks utilizing machinery for any of the following materials: mineral aggregates, bulky trash; litter, dirt, asphalt and debris; haul load to appropriate location.
  5. Perform routine maintenance and care on vehicles and equipment including but not limited to changing blades, adjusting brooms, oil changes and other minor repairs.
  6. Perform routine maintenance activities to maintain the conditions of City right-of-ways, medians, freeways and open space areas.
  7. Coordinate usage of barricades, bump trucks, and other safety equipment with outside agencies.
  8. Identify equipment needed for each assigned project; transport equipment to and from job site.
  9. Operate a variety of equipment and vehicles used in refuse collection, cleaning streets, freeways, medians, open space areas including front-end loaders, tractors, mowers, pesticide applicators, sweepers, and protective vehicles augmented with warning signs, lights and crash cushions.
  10. Make daily operation and maintenance reports at end of work shift and perform daily routine maintenance on assigned equipment and assist with repairs as necessary. Perform daily pre-trip, trip and post-trip inspections.
  11. Coordinate the transportation and assignment location for Metropolitan Detention Center Inmates, the Community Custody Program (CCP) and Metro Community Service Workers.
  12. Confer with supervisor regarding basic operational decisions; make supplementary decisions as required to perform assigned duties in the field.
  13. Perform assigned job duties in the safest possible manner, using all available safety measures and observe department safety programs, plans and initiatives and obey all safety and health rules, measures and regulations.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. May direct and coordinate the activities of two or more laborers in order to accomplish assigned tasks.
  2. Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
  3. Perform a variety of general maintenance duties.
  4. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education directly related to the minimum requirements below may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

High School diploma or GED; and

One (1) year of basic maintenance and operation of a variety of equipment and transport vehicles experience preferred.

Truck driving experience preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Ability to certify as a Commercial Roll-off Driver within three (3) months from date of hire.

Working Conditions

Environmental:
Field and landfill environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gasses, potentially hazardous chemicals, waste and infectious materials; inclement weather conditions.

Physical:
Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate to heavy lifting; walking, sitting, standing, bending, kneeling and climbing; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
